Kathmandu, Pokhara and Mustang Tour Overview

Muktinath is a revered pilgrimage site in Nepal, holding significance for both Hindus and Buddhists. Situated at an altitude of 3,710 meters in the Muktinath Valley, Mustang district, it is known as the "place of salvation." The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and features a pagoda-shaped structure. Surrounding the temple, there are 108 water spouts, symbolizing sacredness, from which holy water flows. Nearby, the Jwala Mai temple houses an eternal flame fueled by natural gas. The area is also home to DamodaraKundam, the source of the Kali Gandaki River, where Saligrama stones can be found.

Muktinath is a significant pilgrimage site for Vaishnavas, considered the 105th Divya Desam. It is part of the eight sacred shrines known as SvayamVyaktaKsetras, alongside renowned places like Srirangam, Tirupati, and Badrinath. The temple houses a gold murti (image) of Lord Vishnu and features an outer courtyard with 108 bull faces for water pouring rituals. Despite the freezing temperatures, devotees bathe in the sacred water, which represents the holy waters from all 108 Sri Vaishnava DivyaDesams.

Astrologically, the number 108 holds significance as it represents the combinations of zodiac signs, planets, and lunar mansions. The worship at Muktinath is conducted by Buddhist nuns, showcasing the interfaith nature of the pilgrimage. The downstream of Kali Gandaki River is considered the source of Silas or Shaligrams, sacred stones used for establishing Vishnu temples worldwide.

Muktinath is regarded as one of the holiest pilgrimage sites for Hindus, Buddhists, and Vaishnavas, drawing visitors seeking spiritual blessings and salvation. The journey to Muktinath offers a profound and transformative experience for pilgrims.
